The Most Important Thing in Life
© Paulo Bittencourt
Why do we live?
What’s the purpose of living?
What do we live for?
To eat?
Drink?
Work?
Have a big house and a big car?
Get laid?
What’s life’s goal?
Oh, life has many goals?
Which, then, is life’s ultimate goal?
There must be a goal that is more valuable than all other goals.
The goal of goals.
Which?
Think.
Hard.
Harder!
What do we want the most?
Exactly.
To be loved.
Loved!
Could there be a single person in the world who doesn’t want to be loved?
Could anyone seriously claim that being loved is not the most important thing in life?
Seriously.
The most important.
Even a book that contains terrible teachings (the Bible) says that the greatest of all things is love.
That without love we are nothing.
N-O-T-H-I-N-G.
Nothing!
But what’s love?
“Love is patient and kind, never jealous, boastful, proud or rude, isn’t selfish or quick tempered, doesn’t keep a record of wrongs that others do, rejoices in the truth, not in evil, is always supportive, loyal, hopeful and trusting and never fails.”
I don’t need to believe in an invisible man in the sky, to agree that that is love.
If that is love, most people don’t love correctly.
Fully.
Myself included.
Good heavens, how far I am from loving like that!
And then, we want to be happy.
Don’t we?
Happy!
Can anyone be happy without being loved?
Almost impossible to imagine.
To be happy, everybody needs to be loved.
Needs.
No love, no happiness.
So, it’s just about being loved?
No.
No!
Love exists only because it’s produced.
If nobody loves, nobody is loved.
We need to produce love.
We need to love.
Love, in order to be loved.
